The “idea of you” has gotten much attention, especially when fans discover the similarity between the main lead character in the movie and Harry’s style. Some people think that the movie’s story is similar to the story of Harry’s life.
In response to the speculation, Nicholas Galitzine recently told variety at the Vanity Fair Oscars party.
“It’s funny because it’s not a comparison I’ve made, but people like to make it. Hayes Campbell, the man I’m playing, is a very different character, and we want him to exist in his world.”
The host further asked him whether we expect to see Styles attending the film’s premiere on the closing night of SXSW, to which the actor responded.
“I don’t know him personally. Harry, if you’re in Austin, Texas, in the next week, come along and chill with Annie and me”.

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee is a novel based on the story of Solèn Marchand, a divorced mother in her forties; she develops feelings for a much younger guy of her age named Hayes Campbell. Despite having much of an age gap and the difference in their lifestyle, Solèn found herself drawn to Hayes in a way she never expected. This novel explores the romantic relationship between the two of them, how their relationship has immense complexities, and how they overcome their emotional journey.
This novel was published on June 13, 2017; during that time, the writer was also asked recurring questions regarding the stranger’s similarities with Styles’ life. She answered to The Vogue in 2020 that “inspired is a strong word.” She had already discovered the idea while researching One Direction in 2017 and learned that Harry Styles used to date older women. She further explained that Hayes’s characters have a lot of inspiration behind them, such as Prince Harry, her past boyfriends, her husband, and Eddie Redmayne.
Even though Lee drew from various sources for her character, people still kept comparing him to Harry Styles, possibly because some scenes in the book seemed similar to things that happened in Harry Styles’ life. For example, there’s a scene in the book where the paparazzi take photos of Solène and Hayes in a compromising situation on a yacht, and later, similar pictures of Harry Styles and Kendall Jenner are released to the public.
